It was a pleasure working with Joel at GS where he was a hiring mgr for Associate and VP level quants. As a recruiter, I appreciated his partnership with my team and focus on our recruitment efforts. I know Joel Horowitz as a Vice President at Goldman Sachs. He is the hiring manager for a heavy recruitment effort that aimed to hire several VPs and associates. I have great memories of the time I used to work with Joel, and I have kept in contact with him over the years. I worked very close to Joel during more than 2 years, I enjoyed that time very much: he is very efficient in his work, very fast in finding and implementing solutions to any financial problem, and very keen on sharing his vision, knowledge and ideas with others. I highly recommend him.

I worked with Joel for several years, where we structured commodity derivatives to fit our firm's clients' needs. Joel's approach to challenges we faced was always very detailed and deep, where he first sought to understand the background to the client's situation and then proceeded to resolve it by utilising available tools or by creating new, tailored ones. Joel's understanding of derivatives is extremely good, yet he is also great in explaining the mathematical functions in simple terms understandable to clients and colleagues with lesser mathematical background. I enjoyed working with Joel and think he was an indispensable part of the team—hard working, very social and always open to new challenges and approaches.

Joel was a member of the group I joined upon starting working at Goldman Sachs. The scope of his knowledge about finance is very broad, and he always found enough time to provide me with good advice. He is very committed to the job, and actively searches for improvements, even beyond his job responsibilities.

Joel is extremely smart. Coupled with his extremely strong mathematical and modelling skills, he was client focused and able to understand the needs of the project and come up with innovative solutions. In this sense he was more than a quant. Additionally, he is an all round nice guy; a great colleague.

Joel was funded by the prestigious FNRS public fund to conduct research in mathematics at Brussels University. He was a member of the very well regarded differential geometry team and enjoyed a reputation across the mathematics department and beyond as being an exceptionally intelligent individual.

As well as being a very talented mathematician, Joel stood out for his dynamic outgoing personality and unusually broad range of skills.

In addition to his research achievements, Joel was the tutor responsible for the differential geometry module which was arguably the most challenging topic in the whole undergrad mathematics course. He excelled at making this highly complex and abstract field accessible to undergrads by seeing problems from their perspective and then explaining the theory in a relatively simple language.

I had the chance to work with Joel and I can tell he was one of the brightest guy I have met in the consulting industry. Among other things, he is a real wizard when it comes to computing anything.
